What is #Amazon4Good?
#Amazon4Good is a Live Twitter party happening this Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 6PM PST / 9PM EST. Join, me, Mamavation and Esca Bona to share your best ideas on expanding access to wholesome, healthy foods for all with Amazon's founder, Jeff Bezos. Together we can do even more good.
#Amazon4Good: How it all Started
So why #Amazon4Good? Well....It all started with a tweet.
Earlier this summer Amazon founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos tweeted that he was looking for the best ideas on how to spend his time and money on philanthropy in the near future
Our Response to Amazon Founder, Jeff Bezos
Well Jeff, we hear you and we have a big, bold idea: Healthy food for all.
Healthy food sits smack dab “at the intersection of urgent need and lasting Impact” that you asked for. It’s also now an unprecedented opportunity for you since Amazon purchased Whole Foods. And, it’s why I’ve joined forces with Mamavation, New Hope Media, and the Good Food Rebels at Esca Bona for an #Amazon4Good Twitter Party.
Amazon: You’re Off to a Great Start. Now, Let’s Do More.
To their credit, Amazon has already begun launching programs to help Americans who struggle with food insecurity: beyond just dropping prices of everyday staples like bananas or milk , Amazon is also piloting a program allowing SNAP recipients (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to purchase groceries online . And, they’ve cut the price of Prime membership ($5.99/month instead of the normal $10.99/month) for anyone with a valid Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, (which disburses funds for programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
The #Amazon4Good Possibilities are Endless
These are all good, important first steps. And, just as other luminaries like Alice Waters and John Foraker who have openly asked Bezos to reimagine the potential of this merger to help good food make a giant leap forward, we too are excited about possibilities. We believe that together we can encourage Amazon can do even more to make healthy food affordable and accessible to everyone, including the 1 in 7 Americans who currently experience hunger on a regular basis.
What Can We Do Together with the Power of Amazon’s 300 Million Customers?
• We 100% eliminated food deserts in America in 1 year
• With just a click, the right choice was also the easy, affordable, accessible choice for every American - including the 23.5 million people who live in food deserts
• We enabled anyone with an Amazon membership to buy and share vegetables, fruits or other wholesome foods to the 1 in 7 Americans who are food insecure
• Amazon shoppers could donate directly to organizations that are building long-term solutions like urban gardens, regional food sheds, farm to school programs and other innovations that make healthy food more accessible.
• “Ugly or misshapen produce” could quickly find markets, slashing food waste and boosting nutrition in the process
